What is recorded here

Defaced means something happened to it, perhaps storm, war or neglect, and what remains is a hole in the local story rather than a display of pride. Gortavicary still holds the shape of that loss: a castle absent from the field but present in the wording of the survey.
A 'defaced castle' at Gortavicary was owned by Sir Nicholas Walsh in 1640, according to the Civil Survery of 1654-6 (Simington 1942, 81). It remains unlocated. Simington, R. C. (ed.) (1942) The Civil Survey AD 1654-1656, vi, the County of Waterford. Irish Manuscripts Commission. Dublin. Date of upload: 26th April, 2011. Compiled by: Michael Moore.
Sir Nicholas Walsh held the defaced castle at Gortavicary in 1640, as recorded in the Civil Survey of 1654–6. Its mention in this survey highlights its status as a known but ruined stronghold during the mid-17th century.
