According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) in 'Gort Ichullen' in 1640 there 'stands the walls of a little castle' under the proprietorship of 'Sir Richard Everard of Everards Castle Knight & Richard Keating fo Nickolstown Esqr Irish Papists' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 339). A castle in Gortacullin, mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654–6), was under the control of Sir Richard Everard and Richard Keating in the 1640s; it is remembered as a minor fortified structure associated with local landholding families during the turbulent period of Confederate Ireland.
