Edgeworthstown, County Longford, contains a vanished castle granted to Andrew Nugent and Richard Delamere in 1621. The Edgeworth family later took the lands and founded the town, perhaps building their house upon the old castle site. The exact location has been lost, leaving behind a ghost town built on top of another ghost.

In 1621 Andrew Nugent and Richard Delamere were granted the castle and lands of Mastrim and Bungare’ (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 537). The castle is depicted on an early 17th-century map of Ardagh barony (BL, Cotton MS Augustus I.ii.25) as a tower house-type structure. Later in the 17th century these lands came into the ownership of the Edgeworth family, who were responsible for the foundation of a town at Mastrim, which later became known as Edgeworthstown (015-063----)(Gillespie and Moran 1991, 210). The precise location of the castle has not been identified. It is possible that in the late 17th century the Edgeworth family may have built their house (LF015-063003-) on the site of, or close to, it.
