Castle stood in the Old Meadow west of the Ballyfoyle to Muckalee road, belonging to Phill Purcell before men uprooted it and stole its stones. The Down Survey reduced it to an old stump, yet little mounds and faint foundation traces still mark the exact spot where a home resisted forgetting.

Indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of Fassadining and on the parish map where it is also annotated as, ‘an old stump’. The proprietor in 1640 is given as ‘Phill Purcell Ir[ish] pap[ist]’. According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 464), the castle, 'stood to the west of the road from Ballyfoyle to Muckalee, in a field called the "Old Meadow." It has been uprooted, but the site may be distinguished without difficulty, being marked by little mounds and traces of foundations'. The location of the castle within the townland is unknown. Built or held by Philip Purcell, an Irish Catholic, by 1640; it appears as an abandoned or ruined structure by 1655–56. Its mention in the Down Survey reflects its historical presence in the barony of Fassadining, though its wider significance remains unclear.
