Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Derrowel Beg and Derrowel More still hide the lost castle beneath western grass. Strafford’s men measured a quarter of its stones and a quarter of its land before the place vanished from memory. That much of a building can disappear only when people stop naming the room where it stood.
The Strafford Inquisition of County Mayo compiled in the early 1600’s for Thomas Wentworth, Lord Deputy, created 1st Earl of Strafford by Charles I in 1640, records '…1/4 part of the castle and qr of land of Derryowle..' (O’Sullivan 1958, 92). The exact location of this castle is unknown. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 9 February 2022

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
