Castle

Situated on the W side of White's Villas. Noted as the site of a castle. Known as 'Black Castle' the castle was situated on the site later occupied by the Queens Hotel. It was in use as a billiard room in the late 18th-century (Ball 1906, 1, 77). It was demolished during the 1840's. No visible surface trace. The Black Castle in Dalkey was likely a medieval structure, possibly built by a local Gaelic lord or Anglo-Norman settler in the 13th or 14th century. It is remembered as an early example of defended architecture in the area and for its later repurposing, with parts of the site used as a billiard room in the 18th century.
