In 1700 Bishop Downes (Brady vol. 1, 1863, 172) described 'the walls of an old castle about the middle of the town (Crookhaven)'. This was an O Mahony castle (Healy 1988, 178). Exact location not now known; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

Bishop Downes described the walls of an old O Mahony castle in Crookhaven around 1700; its exact location is now unknown. The site is remembered as evidence of the O Mahony family's historical presence in the area.
