Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Collooney, County Sligo. In 1124 a castle rose at Cuil-maile to control the borderland, but its exact stones have vanished from memory. Cloonmacduff may still hold the buried foundation, waiting beneath grass and forgotten feet. The castle disappeared the way all young strongholds do when younger strongholds take their shape.
According to Wood-Martin (1882, 167), 'in 1124 the castle of Collooney (Cuil-maile) was erected'. The precise location of this castle is unknown but it may have stood on the site of the castle in Cloonmacduff (SL020-207----). Compiled by: Archaeological Survey Unit, UCC. The castle at Collooney was built in 1124, likely by a local Gaelic lord or Norman settler, and is remembered as an early medieval stronghold in the region. Its importance lies in its historical mention by Wood-Martin, linking it to the broader medieval landscape of the area.
