What is recorded here
Cloonmurly in County Roscommon held a castle that the earl of Kildare lost to Irish rebels before 1596. It vanished from memory so completely that no trace remains for a traveller to find. The absence itself becomes the shape: a building swallowed by land, people and time.
A castle had been lost by the earl of Kildare to Irish rebels before 1596 (Cronin 1980, 117). Not encountered.
