Clare castle belonged to Cogh Omadin when Galway’s castles were listed in 1574, yet no one has since pinned its stones to a field. The name may have drifted into Claremadden, or vanished altogether. Whatever room Cogh Omadin kept there, it withheld even its shadow from later memory.

In the list of castles in Galway, compiled in 1574, is one at 'Clare', in the barony of Longford then in the possession of 'Cogh Omadin' (Nolan 1901, 110).
