What is recorded here

Duncan’s 1821 map marked a castle at the head of a glen in Castlekelly, but later surveys erased it. A house at old Castlekelly may have absorbed part of that castle, yet no wall or stone still shows above the improved pasture. The glen keeps the shape of the loss, while the land feeds livestock instead of memory.
There is a castle marked on Duncans 1821 map which is not indicated on the later OS 6-inch maps. This is located at the head of a glen in what today is improved pasture. The OS Letters 1837 (Herity 2001, 22) describe a house at old Castlekelly which incorporated part of a castle. This may be the same site. There are no visible traces above ground. This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
