What is recorded here
Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of Gowran (Hibernia Regnum) shows a castle inside Castlegarden, County Kilkenny, though no angle or gate is drawn. The name still belongs to the townland, while the building has withdrawn into grass, water or forgotten earth. Perhaps a room, yard or boundary wall remains beneath the garden, waiting for rain to reveal its line.
A castle is indicated in ‘Castlegarden’ townland on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of Gowran (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). The precise location of the castle in the townland is unknown.
