Castlecraddock keeps a castle no map has found. In 1290 David Craddock accused Maurice Russell, sheriff of Waterford, of breaking open its gates and doors, giving the lost place a sudden violent clarity. Perhaps it stood behind a hedge, beside a road now renamed, or in a field whose owners stopped calling it a castle because the walls left. The town still carries the shape of that household, even when the stones refuse to show themselves.

In 1290 David Craddock lodged a petition against Maurice Russell, sheriff of Waterford, for having 'broke open gates and doors of his castle' (Power, 1952, 356).
