What is recorded here
Cartronnacross in County Mayo may hide a lost castle, though no wall or room has reappeared to confirm the claim. The name resists final judgement because the place itself has withdrawn from ordinary sight. What is missing is not a small gap but the whole shape of the building. A castle can exist as a claim and vanish from the field, leaving only the townland to remember it.
A possible castle is marked in Cartronnacross townland on a 1720 Estate map (National Library of Ireland Ms. 2707). Its exact location has not been established.
