Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Carmanhall and Leopardstown still argue about which side of the county takes the castle, while the castle refuses to choose. That ambiguity is not a gap, but a shape: a room with two doors, neither leading outside. Mapping it requires drawing both claims and leaving the middle empty. The castle reappears whenever that empty middle is drawn, not when a point is forced upon it.
The Down Survey (1655-6) maps show a castle at Carmanhall or Leopardstown. Not precisely located. Compiled by: Geraldine Stout and Padraig Clancy Revised upload on: 6 July 2018
