Bishopslough South carries the memory of a castle that vanished before the townland split from its northern neighbour. The Down Survey marked the castle in the southern portion during 1655-6, yet no ruin or exact spot remains for anyone to touch. The place holds a hole shaped like a building, waiting for someone to imagine the doors, rooms and lives that disappeared behind ordinary Kilkenny fields.

A castle is indicated in the S portion of Bishopslough townland on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of ‘Gowran’ and on the parish map of Tullohedin (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). This S portion of the 17th-century townland subsequently became a separate townland called Bishopslough South. The precise location of this castle within the townland is unknown.
