Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

The castle is indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of ‘Gowran’ (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin) and on the parish map of Killerney (NLI MS720), where it is located on the E side of the River Nore and S of Bennetsbridge. The terrier accompanying the parish map describes, ‘at Bennettsbridge a small castle in repaire’ and ‘S[i]r Edw[ard] Blanchvill’ is listed as the proprietor in 1640. The castle is drawn on the Down Survey maps as separate from and S of the medieval bridge (KK024-106001-) and does not appear to relate to the stone tower which was constructed on the bridge in 1393. The precise location of the castle in Bennettsbridge townland is unknown.
