Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Beallavile castle and town appeared in the Strafford Inquisition of County Mayo, but human memory has erased their exact location. That absence is not a failure of recordkeeping; it is a warning about how quickly ordinary life can disappear. Something was built, defended, traded or loved there. The earth kept the shape of it long enough for people to forget the names of the hands that made it.
The Strafford Inquisition of County Mayo records '..the castle, town and bawn of Beallavile,…' (O' Sullivan (1958). The exact location of the castle is unknown. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 November 2022
