What is recorded here
Ballyspellan House stands where a vanished castle once dominated the townland centre. The castle left no stone behind, but it shaped the land long before the house appeared.
A castle is shown on the Down Survey (1655-6) composite map at the approximate position of Ballyspellan House which is roughly in the centre of the townland. The house does not contain a medieval core. Though the castle may have been located in the vicinity of Ballyspellan House, its precise location is unknown.
