Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle, unclassified in Ballyroan (maryborough East By.) stands unlocated in County Laois, yet Owen Roe O'Neill seized it in 1646. The castle may have been a small stronghold, a boundary marker or a forgotten residence, but it entered history through violence and displacement. Its absence from modern visibility does not erase the moment it resisted or submitted.
Unlocated castle within townland mentioned in the OS letters that in 1646 Owen Roe O'Neill seized the Castle of Ballyroan (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, 105). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007
Owen Roe O'Neill seized the Castle of Ballyroan in 1646 during the Irish Confederate Wars. It is remembered for its mention in historical accounts of O'Neill's military campaigns in the mid-17th century.
