Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

No marker remains, but Taaffe's well still stands near Arles cemetery in Ballynagall. The castle belonged to a respectable family, and tradition claims Ms Taaffe died there before appearing at the well. Her ghost turns an ordinary country stone into a threshold between kitchens, births, deaths and memory.
Unlocated castle within townland that is described by O'Byrne as 'Near to this cemetery (Arles) is a well called Taaffe's well (LA032-025002-), situate near to the site of an old castle, once inhabited by a respectable family named Taaffe. Tradition tells us that Ms Taaffe died in the castle, and that her ghost appeared at the well' (O'Byrne 1856, 35). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007
