What is recorded here
Ballykelly in Offaly is not a castle at all but a clerical error repeating itself. The real castle belongs to Ballykealy in Eglish, yet the wrong name still appears in the published inventory. That mistake is the story: a castle displaced into another townland, still unlocated, still unclaimed.
Unlocated castle within the townland of Ballykelly (Loeber 1988 vol. 1, 20). This historical reference is to a castle in the townland of Ballykealy (OF030-084) in the barony of Eglish and not to any castle in the townland of Ballykelly.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
