Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Ballykeeroge, County Wexford: a castle and a house existed there, marked on the 1656-8 Down Survey map, but no one now knows exactly where their stones lay. The castle may have stood on a ridge, beside a road, or sunk beneath grass and bramble. It is not lost because it never existed. It is lost because the land stopped repeating its name.
A house (WX039-050----) and castle are marked on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony map at Ballykeeroge (NLI: ms 725), close to the SW corner. Their precise location is not known. See the attached section of the Down Survey (1656-8) barony map (N at right) reproduced courtesy of the National Library of Ireland (Ms 725) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 January, 2013
