Ballinvoher Castle appeared in the Desmond Roll of 1583 but vanished from local memory before the Civil Survey of 1654-56 reduced it to a ruinous house beside a weare on the River Shennan. William Roche held the drowned ground and broken walls while the true castle location slipped away inside the townland. The river likely carried the stones and stories into mud, leaving only a name and a ghost of a boundary behind.

The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that William Roche a burgess late of Limerick held in Ballinvoher 'one plowland with a ruinous house, & one Cottage and one Weare seate on the River of Shennan' (Simington 1938, 359).
