Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Ballycoragh castle appears only in a passing 1655 mention, leaving behind a ghost rather than a building. Westropp called its existence doubtful, yet doubt itself becomes the shape of the place: a castle so thin it may have been never more than a boundary marker, a guard post or a rumour repeated until it sounded like stone. In that gap between proof and pride, Ballycoragh refuses to be dismissed. It is the kind of castle that exists in the hesitation of the person describing it.
There is a passing reference to Ballycoragh castle in 1655 but Westropp (1906-7, 168) considers the existance of a castle here 'doubtful'. Compiled by: Matt Kelleher Date of upload: 17 May 2016
