Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Ardgowlemore Castle vanished before it was properly named, leaving only a mill and a river behind. It stood on the Dylebegg River in the late 16th century, probably near the present bridge and mill at Altavilla, where water still turns and traffic still crosses. The castle itself may never have been more than a room, a yard and a claim of ownership, yet it entered history because someone remembered the mill. Forgetting the castle is not a loss; it is the shape of the place.
Exact location of Ardgowlemore Castle is not known, though described in late 16th century, with its mill, as being 'on the Dylebegg River' (Westropp 1906-7, 209); consequently Westropp considered its location 'probably near the present bridge and mill' (ibid.) i.e. near Altavilla mill and bridge on the River Deel.
