What is recorded here

An unclassified castle in Annaghmore, County Offaly, presents as a rectangular earthwork with a possible angle tower only when viewed from above. Leo Swan captured that hidden shape in 1972, while ordinary ground and later aerial images give no trace. The site may have been a small fortified place, abandoned or buried beneath grass and time.
Not visible at ground level. Site identified as a 'bastion' type fortification consisting of a rectangular earthwork with possible angle tower visible on aerial photograph taken by Leo Swan IN 1972 (LS_AS_67BWN_0020_03). No cropmark visible on GSI aerial photograph (GSIAP N. 402/3). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
