Castle, unclassified in Ambrosetown is a phantom castle, not a missing one. The town held one knight’s fee, passed from Ambrois to Ameroys and later Neville, yet no castle is recorded there. Any castle belonging to this place would more likely be the possible ruin at Tullycanna, north of the church. The name Castle may preserve a mistake born from distance, not a hidden tower.

Ambrosetown was held by one knight’s fee. William Ambrois held it in 1247 and Adam Ameroys held it in 1324 from the Valence property. Around 1425 villa Ambrosie was held for the heir of Adam Ambros (Brooks 1950, 108-09), but by the 17th century Ambrosetown was held by the Neville family (Jeffrey 1979, 50). According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Sir Edward FitzHarris owned 360 acres at Ambrosetown, but there is no mention of a castle (Simington 1953, 143). The fief probably never had a caput or centre, and the only possible castle in the parish is at Tullycanna (WX041-034----) c. 2.7 km to the N of the parish church (WX046-001001-). William Ambrois held the castle in 1247, and Adam Ameroys in 1324, indicating the family's long-standing local influence. The site is remembered for its connection to the Valence property and as a feudal holding linked to the Ambrois family over several centuries.
