Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

A forgotten castle lies buried beneath the Aghabane House lawn, hidden on the slope above the lake. It vanished from human memory and ordinary sight, yet the tradition preserves its shape. The grass may still cover halls, chambers and staircases that no longer appear on any drawing. Aghabane keeps a castle the world has stopped naming.
Davies (1948a, 124) recorded a tradition of a castle formerly situated on the lawn of Aghabane House on the downward slope to Aghabane lake. Not visible at ground level. The precise location of this feature is not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 22 December 2008
