What is recorded here
Castle is a tower house in Townparks, upper Dundalk By., County Louth, Ireland. It is also called Old Gaol Castle, a name that suggests imprisonment, guard work or sudden fear. The exact chamber is no longer visible, but the place still belongs to memory and local identity.
Approximate location of what is referred to as 'Old Gaol Castle'. (Gosling 1982 165, No. 65; 1991, fig. 20, 10; CLAJ 1915, 396)
The above description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
