Castle stood in Srahane as a low tower with a single-storey wing, passing from Bourke to Craige, Creagh, White and Friend across the seventeenth century. Its exact spot has vanished, but the shape and names remain: a small stronghold large enough to argue over, confirm, pardon and redraw on survey maps.

The precise location of a castle in the townland of Srahane has not been identified. Westropp (1906-7, 95) recorded the following details about Srahane Castle; '1583 W. Bourke holds Srahan C[astle]. (Des. R., 37). 1620 Sir Jas. Craige confirmed in C[astle]. of Shrohane (Pat. R.). 1624 Pardon to Anselm O'Brien for its alienation to W. Creagh in 1618 (Pat. R.). 1655 A low tower and side wing shown. Srughane C[astle]. held by Lau. White and Dom. Creagh (C.S.,xxi., p. 15; D.S.A., 14, 18). 1666 Confirmed to Capt. Friend and Dr. E. Boyle, Bishop of Ferns (Act Sett.).'. Tower-house like castle with single storey house attached to one side is depicted on the 17th century Down Survey map of Clanwilliam Barony (Hib. Reg.) where it is annotated 'Srahane & Cloghmoell'. Tower House with single storey house to one side shown on the Down Survey parish map of Caherconlish (NLI MS. 718). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that the Lawrence White of Limerick an Irish Papist was the owner in Srahane of a 'Castle and sixtie two acres belongeth to the said White excepting one chamber w[hi]ch belongs to Dominicke Creagh of the said Castle' (Simington 1938, 67). William Bourke held Srahane Castle in 1583, and it remained in the possession of the Bourke family into the early 17th century. The castle is remembered as part of the extensive network of defensive structures built by the Anglo-Norman Burkes of Connacht during the late medieval period.
