Castle Semple Railway Bridge carries trains across the old river valley in Renfrewshire, its steel spans built in the twentieth century to keep Scotland’s railways moving. The official record pins the bridge to within one metre, yet it never says whether people may walk beside the rails or must watch from a distance. That absence leaves the structure half-hidden, present only in the shake of passing wheels and the shadow it throws across water.
