What is recorded here

A castle at Killimalrony is marked on the Strafford map of c. 1636 close to the church (RO054-011001-) (Simington 1949, Moycaran), and almost 450 profitable and almost 400 unprofitable acres there were owned by the Dean of Clonmacnoise in 1641. However, the profitable acres had passed largely to Robert FitzGerald by the 1660s (Simington 1949, 60, Moycarn). a rectangular building (dims c. 10m NNE-SSW; c. 5m WNW-ESE) described in gothic lettering as 'Castle Park' is marked on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Situated on a local prominence with rock outcrop in an undulating landscape. A cairn of boulders largely from field clearance (dims c. 16m N-S; c. 14m E-W; H 1.2-1.6m) may obscure the foundations of a castle. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
