Castle of Lonmay was one of nine castles in the northeast corner of Buchan, possibly dating from the 13th Century, but quarrying in the 19th century destroyed most of it. The Montforts held it before marriage passed it to the Irvines of Drum, yet sand dunes now mask the ground where medieval pottery and a flint blade still surface. What remained of its walls became gravel for other people's roads, leaving behind a buried name rather than a visible stone.
