Castle Mound is the surviving earthwork of Oswestry’s medieval castle, built around 1070 and demolished by 1650. Reginald, Sheriff of Shropshire, constructed it on a natural oval mound, while the FitzAlan family later used it as a campaign depot and cavalry base. Its bailey became the seed of the town, and even after Cromwellian forces slighted the castle, the mound remained the heartbeat of Oswestry’s streets and memory.
