Motte castles followed the same rule everywhere: lift the hall above the plain and let the land do the guarding. In Fiddown that rule leaves a castle shaped like a hill, built to be seen before it was understood. The chamber may have been small, the stairs steep and the guard busy, but the height changed what everyone could imagine.
