Castle

Castle, motte

What is recorded here

Ballymoat is the rare lost castle: its large motte was carried away for agriculture, leaving a clean absence where a defensible mound once stood. That is not a failed memory, but a place record of transformation. The land took back the castle's shape, and the story is in the taking.
According to the OS letters of 1838-40 there ‘was a large Moate on the Townland of Ballymoate in this parish but it has all been carried away for agricultural or other purposes’ (O’Flanagan 1928, 119). Date of upload: 19 October 2012

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
