Castle rises on a wide high ridge in Stormanstown, its flat-topped mound still standing six to nine metres above the land. A faded fosse circles the base and a low drystone wall rings the summit, marking the place where someone once watched the horizon. The bailey has nearly vanished to the east, leaving only a shallow scar in the earth. What is left is not a ruin but a ridge made sharp by time, still holding the shape of a warning.
Situated on a wide high ridge and consisting of a high flat-topped mound (diam. at base c. 34m; at summit 16.2m, H 6-9m) with remains of a wide fosse (Wth 6.3m, D 0.9m) now almost filled in but still discernible all the way round. There are very slight remains of a possible bailey (max. L c. 40m, Wth c. 30m, H c. 0.9m) to the ESE of the mound defined by scarping. The remains of a low drystone wall (Wth c. 0.6m, H c. 0.3m) surrounds the summit of the mound. (Morris 1908, 43)

Built by a Norman lord in the late 12th century, likely as a strategic outpost during the Anglo-Norman expansion into Ireland. The site is important as a rare surviving example of early medieval military architecture in the region.
