Castle

Castle, motte and bailey

What is recorded here

Palmerstown in Kilkenny may have hidden a motte and bailey because a 1247 manorial extent mentions a bretage, yet no earthwork has been found. The castle exists only through that word, waiting beneath fields, roads or memory.
According to Orpen (1909, 321), a manorial extent of 1247 mentions 'a "bretage" at the manor of Palmerstown, near Kilkenny'. Orpen equates the term bretage with a motte and bailey. There is no evidence of a motte or motte and bailey in Palmertown townland. The precise location of this possible monument is unknown. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 13 October 2020
