Castle in Monelly is a large flat-topped oval mound with a visible fosse and possible bailey, surviving as a motte and bailey in County Laois. Its steep sides and outer bank suggest a place built to be seen, defended and remembered. A person may have stood on that summit, watching the land turn beneath them, knowing the mound would outlast every name spoken there.

A large flat-topped almost oval-shaped mound (summit diam. c. 27m N-S, base diam. c. 39m N-S; H c. 5.5m-6m) with a berm. A fosse (Wth c. 5.4m; D c. 0.75m) is visible at E and S and an external bank at S. Possible bailey at NNW.
