Castle, motte and bailey in Killester North: William Brun of Killester occupied a 12th century house there. A substantial portion of the surrounding moate and bailey survived into the late 20’s, then the exact place slipped from view. What remains is a castle-shaped absence: high earth, a ditch, a courtyard and a man whose name still belongs to the land.

According to Howlett (1979, 7) a substantial portion of a motte and bailey survived in Killester up until the 1920s. The exact location of this monument is unknown. Referring to a 12th century house occupied by William Brun of Killester, she wrote that “a substantial portion of the surrounding moate and bailey survived up to the late 20’s”, quoting Father J Kenny in History of Coolock Parish 1934.

A motte and bailey castle in Killester North was likely built in the 12th century, possibly by a Norman lord such as William de Burgh, and is remembered as part of the early medieval fortification network in Ireland.
