Castle Dyke moated site

Castle Dyke in Castledike Wood, near Aunby, is a well-preserved medieval moated manorial complex. The moated island measures about fifty metres across and sits inside a larger ditched enclosure, with a smaller annex at its south-west corner. The de Colville family held the nearby Bytham manor in the twelfth century, and this is likely where they lived or managed local affairs. Water, earth and buried timber still mark the shape of a home that stopped being lived in centuries ago.
