Built by Llywelyn the Great, Castell y Bere was constructed in the early 13th century as a strategic royal castle to consolidate Welsh control in the region. It is important as a rare example of a Welsh-built castle and a symbol of Llywelyn's efforts to strengthen his authority in Gwynedd.
