Kidwelly Castle is a ruined stone stronghold overlooking the River Gwendraeth, first built in 1106 by Roger of Salisbury to enforce Norman rule in south Wales. It changed hands repeatedly, falling to Welsh princes like Rhys ap Gruffudd and Llywelyn the Great before Edward I’s commanders rebuilt it with massive corner towers in the 1270s. The gatehouse remained unfinished when the Glyndŵr Rising began, forcing a desperate last-minute defence with dug ditches and timber towers against Welsh forces.
