Cashelnagor Fairy Fort Site

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Cashelnagor is a rocky platform ringed by a modern stone wall on a sloping pasture above the Glenna River. People call it a fairy fort, but it may have been a human shelter where the boundary between worlds grew thin. The wall marks the edge of a place that resisted mapping, preserving a shape older than survey lines.
There is no sign of the 'Cashelnagor' marked on the 2nd and 3rd editions of the OS 6-inch maps. The site is a platform of rock around the edge of which runs a modern stone wall. This is locally regarded as 'a 'Fort'. The site is located on sloping pasture overlooking the Glenna River to the W. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
