Cashel is a ruined circular stone fort on a Mayo ridge, reduced to a low grass-covered bank and a faint eastern curve. It sits between two other cashels, watched by blackthorn and open to the northern sky. The road took its south side and the fence cuts through its heart, yet the remaining stones still mark the shape of a place people once built to keep out the dark.
In pasture, located on a roughly E-W ridge, close to the break of slope on the N side. There are very good views to N−NE.
This cashel is not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is named ‘Cashel’ on the 1919 edition. Dilapidated remains of an originally circular cashel (diam. c. 25m), crossed E of centre by a field fence on a NNE−SSW axis and truncated to S by an E-W road.
The enclosing wall survives at SW−NNE as a low, sod-covered stone bank (Wth c. 2.5m). Large in situ stone blocks, part of the original external wall face, are visible in parts. It survives to a maximum external height of c. 0.65m, and its internal edge is almost flush with the slightly raised interior surface. At NW−N remnants of a field wall on a roughly E−W axis merge with the wall.
The E arc of the cashel wall has been removed, and its original curve can be traced now as a slight, grass-covered undulation. The S arc of the cashel has been destroyed by the E-W road. A thicket of blackthorn obscures much of the W half of the cashel.
There is a cashel (MA073-028----) 150m to WSW and another cashel (MA073-030001-) 200m to SE.
