Carrigeenamoe is a crannog in County Mayo, Ireland. It is an artificial island, usually built of stone, soil and vegetation, placed in shallow water to create dry land for a home, shrine or hiding spot. People may have stood knee-deep in cold lake water while building it, carrying heavy loads and shaping a small world above the surface. The name still points to that hidden making, where human hands turned open water into a place for living.
