What is recorded here
Carns holds a ruined corn-drying kiln on its south side, proving the stones served hunger before memory. The circular mound stretches fourteen metres across a sunny pasture slope, large enough for people to move around and use repeatedly. It is not a passive marker but a working place where grain, heat and human hands met.
In pasture, on S-facing slope, c. 11m to NW of dump-constructed ring of stones (9412). Roughly circular cairn (13.3m N-S; 14.2m E-W; H 1.6m) with ruined corn-drying kiln (9310) attached to S side.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
A roughly circular cairn with an attached corn-drying kiln, likely dating to the Early Christian or medieval period. Its significance lies in the rare combination of funerary and domestic/industrial structures, indicating possible long-term reuse of the site.
