Overview
Carn Fadryn is a great multi-walled hillfort on the Llŷn Peninsula whose highest enclosure was reused for one of the earliest documented native Welsh stone castles. Fortification began around 300 BC and later expanded across roughly twenty-six acres. Gerald of Wales recorded a newly built castle of the sons of Owain Gwynedd here in 1188, fixing the summit within the struggle among Welsh princely families as well as its much older defended landscape.
Who made it and when
Later prehistoric communities first enclosed about twelve acres of the summit around 300 BC and later strengthened a much wider area. In the twelfth century sons of Owain Gwynedd built or occupied a smaller stone castle within the highest part of those older earthworks.
How it was made and used
Massive banks and walls used the mountain's natural crags to protect dwellings, stock and people over a broad summit. Medieval builders then selected the strongest inner height for a compact lordly castle, reusing ancient defence to command Llŷn.
What was found
Survey has separated three main fortified areas and shown settlement platforms within the enclosures. Gerald of Wales's 1188 description supplies rare written evidence for the Welsh castle, although it does not answer every question about the prehistoric builders.
What remains
Stone ramparts, gateways, hut platforms and the foundations of the medieval castle remain across the summit. Collapse has blurred wall faces, but the nested defensive lines and the castle's position inside them can still be followed on the ground.
Why it mattered
Carn Fadryn mattered because the same mountain expressed power in prehistoric and princely Wales. The documented castle challenges the idea that sophisticated castle building belonged only to Anglo-Norman conquerors, while the much larger fort records an older organised community.
