Explorer TomCardiff M.A.D.E. occupies a small Roath address with an ambitious idea: give the city's makers a place where their work can meet actual people. Walk into 41 Lochaber Street and the shelves may hold ceramics, prints or something that refuses a tidy label. It is a lively stop for anyone who likes finding out who made the thing in their hands.
The enterprise says it began in 2013 as a showcase for creative work from South Wales. Its shop now works with more than two hundred artists, craft workers and makers. Alongside ceramics and prints it lists clothing and knitwear, with collections changing as new work comes in. The organisation also accepts submissions and offers mentoring for emerging makers, so the display reflects a living local trade rather than a fixed museum collection.
Roath's residential streets give the gallery an intimate setting. Take time to read the maker details instead of simply choosing a souvenir by colour. A printed image may lead you to a Cardiff artist; a bowl may bring the person who fired it into the story. Cardiff M.A.D.E. has hosted exhibitions and performances as well as selling work, but check the current programme before turning up for a particular event.
The shop currently gives Thursday to Saturday hours of 10am to 6pm and Sunday 11am to 4pm; it is closed to ordinary walk-ins on the other days. Check its own site before travelling, as exhibitions and hours can change. Entry to browse is free, while purchases support the makers. The best bit is leaving with a name you did not know when you came in.
